Twisting the Day Away

Storm Chasing with Steve Carey

Another ominous wall cloud looks ready to produce a tornado. Fortunately for local residents, it did not.

I have to keep this short as I got into Oklahoma City late last night and have to get ready for a busy chase day today.   We intercepted two supercells, one of which came vey close to dropping a tornado in front of us.   And then there is the question of whether we actually drove into a tornado or not.  As we were driving to one of the storms, what appeared to be a deris swirl appeared right in front of us.  If it was a tornado, it was a very weak one with no obvious condensation funnel (at least from our perspective).  One of our group captured some video of it, so we need to give that a good look.  A weak tornado was reported near our location…so, did we  drive into a tornado?  Maybe so.  Today looks to be a very active chase day with possible strong, long-track tornadoes in Oklahoma.

A rotating wall cloud is quite obvious in this photo taken in northwest Oklahoma on May 23, 2011.
